Volunteer Reviews 2

Here is a continuation of our Volunteer Profiles and Reviews.

Silvia Gelser- Munich, Germany

Although Silva was only here for 6 weeks she was able to introduce yoga to the community and was another idea which moved us toward creating the 6th Component.   Being born in Germany and relocating to Costa Rica she was an excellent English teacher due to her ability to speak various languages.  Teaching something as unique as yoga in this small remote community and being her own business owner made her a special positive influence especially for the young ladies in our program.

Ramon Christian- Zurich, Switserland

Roman reached us just at the right time and filled in were needed. His strong background in Sports and Languages was a real help. Roman worked especially well with the boys who are at the age when they are making life and career decisions. Not only was he able to bring the youths closer to Christ, but they all felt comfortable asking him many questions about what it is like living and working Europe. It was also an incredible coincidence that he came to us with prior martial arts experience just as Joe & Daniel were in need of more help with the growing sports component last year.

A Great Opportunity to Share English and Sports

Just spend one month with Blue Lagoon Volunteering turned out to be a great experience. I stayed at the River House with director Patrick, his wife and 2 other volunteers. It had been recently remodeled with new walls and cement floors. The food was good with a refrigerator stocked full and always open. Working with the kids engaging in Poetry, English and Sports was fun and educational for the children and myself. We also worked at the Eco-Farm transplanting fruit trees to be shared with families in need. I loved the fact that the program was all inclusive. I virtually needed no money above the program fees with many free recreational activities and natural wonders to explore during my ample free time. I highly recommend Blue Lagoon Volunteering and have already made plans to return this next December. It was great to be a part of a team that is really dedicated to helping others all the way out in the jungle of Peru ! I really feel like a made a difference while learning so much about the people, culture and exotic and medicinal plants and fruits of the Amazon. Whatever your sports or hobby Patrick finds the resources to make it part of the kids program during your stay along with the English classes which are structured so even a first time teacher can learn and share.

Siehat

Seihat is a Blue Lagoon local who is a professional rock and tree climber.  His English is excellent and he volunteered 2 afternoons a week to help with the Sports and Poetry program during several of our program cycles.  He and I are currently working on adding tree and rock climbing to our  6th Component.  This will be a nice addition for volunteers and students as well.

I Loved The Opprotunity to Help the Kids Here !

I have enjoyed working with several international teams that Patrick and Don Juan have put together over the past few years. It’s been fun meeting people from other places interested in helping the children of our community. I look forward to developing the hiking and tree climbing. We have unlimited hikes to waterfalls and trees well over 100 years old to climb here at

Don Juan

Don Juan Garcia de Aguila has been the main patron of the community.  He had lived here at The Blue Lagoon his entire life as a rancher and agriculturist.  As a young man he was selected by the Peruvian government to represent the Peruvian Rain forest area through a 6 month agricultural exchanged program in the United States.  He has also served as the city’s mayor and served as a head pastor for many years at a prominent church.  When we first came to The Blue Lagoon he was someone I instantly gravitated to and we have been friends ever since.  His knowledge and vision have greatly influences the development of our pueblo and the culmination of his efforts has been The Eco-Park/Recreo Villa Rica.  If it were not for his encouragement Amazon Christian Volunteering/ Amazon Volunteering would not exist.

Patrick Reardon- Director

Patrick Reardon- I guess that turned out to be me.  Given my upbringing I did not see this as part of myt life’s journey but here I am and love were I am and what I am doing being able to be of service to my volunteers, staff and especially the this community who embrassed me with open arms 6 years ago when I arrived in the amazon.

I first started volunteering when I was an undergraduate in San Francisco over 20 years ago and this continued all the way through my PhD.  I found working with the inner-city kids of San Francisco  a real break from work and my studies- a significant stress reducer.  I made my first trip to South America in 2006 and little by little turned it into my life’s main passion having lived in South America 75% of the time during the last 10 years.
